Cumberland is in Western Maryland, nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, and is the seat of Allegany County. Although moderate in size with a population of less than 22,000, it is the regional business and commercial center for Western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands. Cumberland’s motto is “Come for a Visit, Stay for Life.”
Cumberland, MD was the starting point of the first national highway, Route 40. It became known for glass blowing and brewing, tires and steel. Now, it is focused on technology.
Among Cumberland’s attractions are: the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the Allegheny Highlands Trail, Rocky Gap State Park, Green Ridge State Park, and Dans Mountain State Park. Popular events include Heritage Day Festival (mid-June), the Canal Fest (mid-July), and the Tri-State Concert Series. (throughout the year).
